Love is a Weapon
I was scheduled to minister to a young woman who had a very seedy and painful past. When she walked into our meeting place, I could tell she was very tormented by the demonic. She was physically contorting from the moment I met her, but she could speak clearly.
"I am going to teach you how to rest in the presence of the enemy. I want you to relax your muscles. Get comfortable. And listen to her story."
I was truly shocked that THAT was all the great advice He wanted to give me. We took our seats. My knees were facing her knees. My thoughts were running each other over when I remembered that the Holy Spirit told me to listen to her story. So, even though she was violently contorting and having a hard time forming words, I said the only thing that came to mind.
"Tell me about your life’s story. Tell me anything you would like for me to know about you."
She started talking and as she talked about her past, my heart started to break for hers. She had been abandoned as a child and she raised herself on the streets. She was later groomed by a pimp to sell her body. Then she became pregnant multiple times and did not know who her children’s dads were. Her pimp turned into her boyfriend and he would physically beat her. CPS ended up taking her children from her.
After rattling her story off to me like it was a laundry list, she stopped and looked up at me (all the while still contorting) and said to me with all the anger she could muster:
"All my life, death has been chasing me! My Mother tried to kill me while I was in her belly! She even tried to have an illegal abortion, which failed and resulted in me being born! Then, the doctor asked my Mom if she wanted him to kill me right there on the table, and she said she would! The doctor tried, but it didn’t work! Now on the streets, I have been beaten, raped, and held at gunpoint! Like I said, death has been chasing me all my life!"
She glared at me with such anger and pain, and at that moment, I knew what God wanted to say to her:
“What if all your life LIFE has been chasing you? What if God’s love was after you the whole entire time? What if all your life, God was pursuing you?”
She jumped back as if I threw cold water on her. She looked shocked, the physical contorting stopped, and after a long pause, she said:
“I never thought about it that way. Oh, my gosh, God has saved me over and over.”
I cannot quite explain what happened that day except that God’s love rushed in to that woman’s heart and drove some demons out. She left changed. She looked different. She was smiling and had a peace about her.
During the hour of me speaking with her, the physical demonic manifestations never ceased, until God had me speak those words to her; and those were the only words I spoke. Through this experience, He taught me how powerful His love is. That just a drop of it can send demons fleeing.
We need to not underestimate what love can do, what a difference it can make in someone’s life. Love is powerful. It is really the most powerful weapon we have. Paul said you can have all the spiritual giftings you so desire, but if you do not have love, you have nothing.[ii]
